When I held an Einarsson fly reel for the first time I am sure I smiled a bit. Holding one of the reels crafted in Steingrimur Einarsson’s vision is a joy, I can attest to this. Simply touching these sumptuously crafted reels, most anglers can tell that they are cradling a reel like none other. Designed originally for pursuing Atlantic Salmon through the volcanic fjords of Iceland, the Einarsonn Invictus and Plus reels were soon being coveted by discerning fly fishermen throughout the world for other freshwater and saltwater species of fish.
Fortunately the Fall is a great time for testing reels around the area Stillwater Fly Shop is located. We are located within reach of rivers that have great steelhead runs, large Brown trout and wiley Rainbow trout. My expectations were very high from just handling the reel in the shop. I couldn’t wait to get one on a rod.
I tried the Einarsson 3plus reel one evening after work on the local river. I noticed right off how smoothly the drag pull was when I stripped line off to thread my rod’s guides. The sealed drag is assembled with the finest components from around the world, I could feel the craftsmanship. The aesthetics were as pleasing as the functionality. Beautifully sleek with a touch of northern European flair, the 3plus’s ultra-hard anodization made it tough and luxurious.
The 3plus fly reel balanced my rod perfectly and I was enjoying casting, forgetting my original goal of testing this reel. After several casts I accomplished my goal by hooking a Brown Trout that crushed my streamer in a swirling splash. He immediately headed to the closest log in the river. My rod was bent as the heavy current allied with trout testing the drag on my reel. The carbon discs in the drag slowed the fish down with absolutely no jerking. Tightening the drag was simple with the large knob. Ultimately, the reel performed as I had envisioned the first time I took it out of the box.
Einarsson Plus Series fly reels come in four colors: black, bronze, clear and red. There are five sizes to cover all species of freshwater and saltwater fish: 3plus, 5plus, 7plus, 8plus and the 9plus. After landing several more trout I headed home thinking about what I would write about these reels. Then I realized that I could sum the Einarsson Plus reel up in three words: dependable, rugged and hand-crafted. This Einarsson Plus Series fly reels is perfect for the fly fisherman who desires the finest fully machined reel available with a fully sealed, no maintenance drag.
Einarsson has perfected the reel for large freshwater and saltwater fish. The Invictus Reel for steelhead fishing is one of the most incredible pieces of equipment that I have ever used. Encased in an Anodized Type III coated, fully machined aluminum frame is one of the most innovative drags that I have ever encountered. The durability of the anodizing process of the Invictus would set this reel apart just because of this feature, but the patented Shock Absorbing Brake (SAB) that is the centerpiece of this reel is the innovation that has made this reel a one of a kind.
Steelhead fishing isn’t a sure thing. When an angler finally hooks one, he or she wants a drag that can handle blistering runs and throbbing head shakes. The Invictus Reel manifests these requirements in its design and functionality like no other fly reel I have encountered.
I finally hooked a fish after a long day of casting. The steelhead took my fly very softly at first. Often a steelhead releases the fly from its mouth since the resistance of the angler’s reel drag is too great. Invictus’s SAB drag made this a non-issue with this fish because the starting inertia is so low. The drag tension starts out so lightly that fish probably don’t realize that they are hooked until it is too late. What makes this possible is the Torque Spring that absorbs sudden shocks on the drag system. It was quite apparent the difference this drag design makes just by how easily I subdued this steelhead. When the fish jumped or shook its head I could feel the Torque Spring absorbing the sudden changes in tension. I can’t really describe it but the Invictus is amazing when fighting large fish. Stillwater Fly Shop carries all four sizes of Einarsson Invictus Fly Reels.
